PCA
RUF is the college ministry of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). Sponsorship by and accountability to a denomination is unusual among evangelical campus ministries. RUF’s unusual identity raises two sets of questions.
What are these Presbyterians really up to at UNC?
Is RUF mostly for Presbyterians? No.
- First, RUF insists on being accessible to students from any background; in fact, the majority of students involved in RUF across the U.S. are not “congenital presbyterians.”
- Second, RUF will encourage students to choose a church based both on their background and their own conscience; thus RUF students are likely to be involved in various local churches but not simply based on a whim.
Does RUF try to “make” Presbyterians? No.
- First RUF wants students to become listeners to the Bible—which doesn’t require faith at all.
- Second, RUF wants students to believe the Scriptures so that they search out a full and rich understanding of their calling in the world.
- Third, RUF wants students to develop convictions that shape their lives. If that turns someone into a presbyterian, that is fine. Being a presbyterian without this is a little more dubious. As a kind of beginning place, being a presbyterian is great. As an alternative to questioning, listening and growing—we don’t want anyone to be a presbyterian.
Are Students expected to agree with Presbyterian Teaching? No.
- Students are expected to grapple with the teaching of the Scriptures.
- Of course, the instruction by RUF staff will be in keeping with the PCA’s convictions. You are invited to listen, question, check the homework and raise issues that we seem to be ignoring.
- Student leaders are expected to have a general respect for RUF’s convictions and to cooperate with them in so far as they are evangelical convictions.
